This project exemplifies the skills that I have picked up from my studies in communications and writing in the form of marketing writing in the brochure, and advertisement creation overall. Many of the classes that I took at University of New England were writing-based and project-based, so I was able to gain knowledge of how to effectively write across multiple contexts and how to create advertising and marketing material for different purposes, among other things. Throughout the process of completing this project, there were many times where I had to think critically about small decisions that I was making about the brochure. The knowledge that I gained from coursework allowed me to make informed decisions about things like picture placement, wording in certain sections of the brochure, what the overall layout of the brochure should look like, and more.
Initially, I chose to look at a philosophy paper that I wrote a year or two ago a my revision project. However, after presenting the idea to the class and thinking over it a second time, I decided to choose a project that I was less proud of. The first brochure that I made for Professional and Technical Writing was just that, a project that I was not very proud of. I saw a lot of potential with this piece, especially considering that my supervisor at my internship was asking me to build a brochure for the new farmstand opening up at Blackrock Farm this year. So, I wasn’t very proud of my initial work, but thankfully the stars aligned and I got to take a second crack at it with a real-world application tied to it.
Remembering the original work process is a tough thing to think about. For one, it was a group-based project that required us to work together on a singular advertisement for the creation of a fictitious application for a smartphone. The concept was a little all over the place, and, because of that, so were our creative processes. Since my knowledge and skills have both grown in the time since the original project, I feel that I took this new project a little more seriously than the one in the past. The main reason is because it was actual work that I would submit to my internship supervisor at The Nonantum.
The attention to detail in the new project is unable to be matched by the original. Just examining both of the works and noticing the little differences in detail and formatting considerations proves this. I now look at the opportunity to make a brochure advertisement like this as “how to best market this toward who we are trying to market it toward.” This approach was not necessarily in mind when I was creating the first project with my groupmates.
